The Congress's Lok Sabha MP from Alappuzha in Kerala, K.C. Venugopal has been one of party leader Rahul Gandhi's closest associates in the past decade.
Speaking at the 2026 India Today conclave, the Congress's general secretary-organisation started by fending off claims that he might be a power centre in the party, saying his job was "decision-routing". He also denied the Congress was on the wane, saying, "Every political party has its ups and downs. The BJP once had just two MPs, was losing every election..." The senior Congress leader accused the saffron party of weaponising every institution against political opponents, and alleged the Election Commission was also in cahoots with them.
