LEMMY'S BASS TECH

Tim Butcher, who was with Lemmy for more than 30 years, on the loud antics of his much-adored boss.

"I was the bass technician for Lemmy for more than thirty years, though I knew him from his days with Hawkwind. It was a brilliant job. Working with your mates is the best thing in the world.

"I ran a stage crew for local events in Cardiff, and we were hired to work on a Motörhead show on the Ace Of Spades tour. My crew got on well with the Motörhead crew, we had the same attitude. Let's just say that none of us were quiet, non-drinking boys. So Eagle, the band's then tour manager, invited us on to the next British tour.

"When Phil Campbell joined in 1984, he asked me to be his guitar tech. I also ended up doing Lemmy's bass. I worked for the other guitarist, Würzel, as well. We had the same crew every year and it became a family. You have to have a certain personality to work for Motörhead. That's where the song (We Are) The Road Crew came from. Ten years after the band broke up, most of us still keep in touch.
