American pianist adds to his Leeds victory in 2018

Eric Lu takes coveted Chopin prize

Good things come to those who wait. And for Eric Lu, that wait involved staying up until 2.30am to discover that he was the winner of the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in late October. With most of the audience having gone to bed and little more than a handful of die-hard journalists still around to hear the result, the American pianist, 27, learnt that, after a five-hour deliberation among the 17-person jury, his performance of Chopin's Concerto No. 2 in F minor had lifted him to top spot in the final, earning him a €60,000 (£52,500) prize and a major career boost.
