Americana stars Red Sky July on creating cinematic soundscapes

WE only ever meant for this to be a side project,” says Ally McErlaine, laughing, as his band, Red Sky July, prepares to release its latest record. “We thought maybe we’d put out an album and see what happened.”

The guitarist - best known as a founding member of Texas - formed the Americana-influenced trio with his wife, in-demand songwriter and composer Shelly Poole, in 2008 as a way of “making the music we really wanted to make ourselves” in between the writing and soundtrack work that takes up most of the couple’s time.

imageOn fourth album, Misty Morning, they are joined by Haley Glennie-Smith, replacing original vocalist Charity Hair who returned home to the southern US when the pandemic hit.
