Stories to inspire

September 2024

I've always collected other women's inspiring stories. On the days I feel overwhelmed by self-doubt or fear, I gather them close. They are like sparks of light, igniting that voice within me that says, if they can do this, so can you...

RACHEL PERU

Rachel Peru became a curve and lingerie model at 46, having spent much of her life unhappy with her body. Aged 40, and at a low ebb, she modelled for the first time, at a Macmillan Cancer Support fashion show.

'When I came off stage, my head felt higher and my shoulders were back,' she says. 'It was exhilarating." In time, she sent photos of herself to modelling agencies across the country. "My word for that decade was "Brave", and I figured I had nothing to lose.' She was quickly signed by a London agency, and at 53, now models across the world.

'I didn't expect to be asked to shoot swimwear or lingerie,' says Peru. 'But they're my favourites, because of the feedback from other women, who are so grateful to see a body they can relate to. Their words are a boost on the days my confidence is low.

'Don't let fear hold you back,' she advises. "Start saying yes to life. When we step out of our comfort zone is when we grow the most. And growth is scary and messy, but also exciting and enlivening.'

Don't fear the D-WORD

While most of us associate this month with fresh starts — new routines, dry spells, gym sign-ups — those who work in the relationship world call it something far more sobering: divorce month. And for good reason.

HARMONY at home

We spend weeks preparing our homes for Christmas...but does anyone prepare for when it's over? You know the feeling: the decorations have come down, the mince pies have been eaten, but your home doesn't feel like it's supporting you into the new year. I believe this is because our homes hold energetic residue.

MOVING FROM GUILT TO GRACE

How many times a day do you hear yourself saying sorry? ‘Sorry, could I just…?’ ‘Sorry, I can’t make it tonight.’ ‘Sorry, I’m not free.’ We apologise for taking up space, for saying no, for changing our minds, even for wanting something different. Sometimes it just slips out before you’ve even had time to check if it belongs there.
