The Future is Now

Smart tech making you feel dumb? We've translated the geek speak to answer your basic questions about smart homes and the way they're shaping our lives. Read on for a noob-friendly guide to the homes of the future.

What is a smart home?

Essentially, it's a home equipped with internet-connected objects, which allow the homeowner to control their environment – including lighting, heating and appliances –through their smartphone or computer. These devices, from lightbulbs to pet feeders, can be controlled remotely, be programmed to operate on a schedule, or communicate and work with each other.

Why do I want a smart home?

Think of the smart home ecosystem as a fleet of domestic servants, not only obeying your every command but learning your habits and anticipating your needs, so you can move smoothly around a home that's actively working for your comfort and convenience. "A smart home can automate a lot of everyday tasks: turning lights on and off, adjusting heating and cooling, and even keyless entry, which is really popular, all from your phone or with voice control," explains Lee Dewerson, managing director of Safe n Sound (safensound.co.nz).

Essentially, a smart home system gives you control of your domain, from cool functions like setting the perfect lighting and music mood, to controlling the heating so you come home to an already toasty house. It lets you protect your perimeter (with remote-accessible video doorbells, alarms and security cameras), and boost the exchequer by monitoring energy usage and using appliances more efficiently.
