Regular car maintenance is essential for keeping your vehicle running smoothly and safely, no matter the time of year. Each season presents different challenges, from icy winter roads to scorching summer heat.

SEASONAL CHECKS AND DIY TIPS

By following a seasonal maintenance routine, you can prevent breakdowns, improve fuel efficiency, and extend the lifespan of your car. This guide outlines key checks and DIY tips to keep your car in peak condition throughout the year.

Prepare for warmer months and long drives

Spring and summer are the perfect times to inspect your vehicle after the wear and tear of winter. Warmer weather often means longer drives, so ensuring your car is ready is crucial.

Checklist for spring and summer:

Check tyre pressure and tread: Heat causes tyre pressure to fluctuate. Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended levels. Tread depth should be at least 1.6mm to maintain grip. Uneven wear patterns could indicate misalignment or other issues requiring attention.

Inspect fluid levels: Top up engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Check for any leaks under the car, as these could signal issues that need addressing.

Air conditioning check: Test the air conditioner. If it blows warm air, it might need regassing. Also, inspect the cabin air filter and replace it if it's dirty to ensure proper airflow.

Battery health: Warmer temperatures can shorten battery life. Check for corrosion and clean terminals if necessary. Consider having the battery tested at an auto parts store to ensure it's holding a proper charge.

Wash and wax: Salt and grime from winter can damage paint. Give your car a thorough clean and apply wax to protect against UV rays. Pay extra attention to the undercarriage to remove any leftover salt or debris.

Additional summer tips:

  • Keep a sunshade in your car to protect the interior from heat and fading.

  • Carry extra water in case of overheating during long trips.
