Create a rustic, solid bar table.

- Gijs van Essen

ALL BAR NONE

To start this project I sketched and designed what I was aiming to build (see the diagrams). I bought a slab of Brazilian walnut; it is a dense and resilient wood that comes from the forests of Central and South America. Like other tropical woods, Brazilian walnut bears some unique characteristics. It's a particularly durable wood that weathers fantastically and looks beautiful. The slab was too long for my design, so I cut off the cracked part.

I used an electrical circular saw to adjust the slab and several chisels and a rubber mallet to remove the bark. I recommend using a rubber mallet to prevent damage to your chisels, which must be sharp, obviously.

To install the mild steel bars, I first created a wooden jig to guide the router, which I used to create the slots. Then I mounted the mild steel bars in the slots, to prevent the wood from cracking.

Yet many drivers only think about their brakes when something goes wrong. Regularly checking your brake pads and parking brake doesn't just keep you safe, it can save you money by catching wear before it becomes a major repair.

MAINTENANCE NEGLECT

South Africans take home security seriously. Investing in retractable gates, burglar bars, security shutters, and alarm systems, all to safeguard the people and possessions we care about most. Yet, one of the most overlooked risks to that safety isn't external. It's the slow decline of the very barriers we trust to keep danger out.

SECRETS TO A CLEANER, SAFER KITCHEN

It starts before the first dish is served. Before the final checks - straightening a chair or adjusting a table setting - before the doors open, and the first guest walks in. It starts with clean counters, gleaming floors, and the quiet confidence that every surface has been properly sanitised. Food safety and kitchen cleanliness aren't just afterthoughts or tasks to be hurried through at closing time. They're the foundation of everything that happens in a successful restaurant.
