CONVERTING THE LOFT CAN ADD BOTH SPACE AND VALUE TO YOUR HOME WITHOUT CHANGING THE OVERALL FOOTPRINT. OUR GUIDE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

LOFT CONVERSIONS

When renovating, the most cost-effective way to add space to your home is to make better use of the space you already have, and converting your loft could be the ideal way to do this.

Planning a loft conversion can be complex, but getting it right is essential if you want a project that runs smoothly and produces a successful result. But there's a lot to consider. First, find out if your loft is suitable for conversion. If it is, you need to weigh up what you can afford against the type of conversion you'd like to build. There are considerations over permissions, too - while some loft conversions don't require planning permission, there are strict building regulations that your project will need to pass.

Everything from the age of your property and the amount of space you need to what you'll use it for should play a part in the kind of conversion you opt for. But ultimately, it can be one of the least disruptive and most rewarding renovations to take on. This guide will answer the most burning questions to help you decide if it's right for you...

Q1 WILL IT TAKE LONG TO COMPLETE?

A This will depend on the type of loft conversion you opt for, where you live and whether there are any unforeseen issues along the way. Somewhere in the region of three to four months is reasonable. For the build itself, you are looking at anything from about four weeks for a rooflight conversion, about six for a dormer, and up to eight weeks for a mansard loft conversion. Add on to that between two and four weeks to finalise the design, around 12 weeks for planning permission and party wall agreements (if required) and another couple of weeks for finishing touches.
