A gut renovation made a New York farmhouse seem like it's part of an enchanted forest.

IT’S SET A SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE TOWN,” SAYS Melissa Anderson of OAD Interiors, describing her clients’ home in Woodstock, New York. “But you feel like you have entered your own seclusive fairy tale upon arrival.” The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house rests on a nearly 20-acre property that was once a working farm. Built in the early 1900s, the Dutch Colonial–style home presented a layout and bold features—like orange wood ceilings and cherry red walls—that didn’t suit the current homeowners’ taste. But they were bowled over by the natural setting—as was Anderson.

“There’s just infinite landscape, so it’s really pretty magical,” she says. “We wanted to create this kind of fantasy interior to match the surrounding area.”
