This month, Willow Kemp discusses the importance of considering the scale and balance of artworks
-
As design director for Kit Kemp Design Studio and art ambassador for Firmdale Hotels, and having studied architecture at Cambridge and sculpture in Germany, Willow is well versed in anything art-related.
Creating balance and understanding scale is vital to achieve a sense of harmony and completeness in a space. I'm fascinated by how an artist uses scale and balance in their work because I know that is what draws me to a piece, but when I experience an artwork, I don’t just enjoy the work itself, my mind then moves on to how it could be displayed and how I could employ it to ensure a cohesive interior space.
Artists use colour, light and texture to create visual weight. A dark, bold shape on one side of a cavas might be balanced by a softer, more delicate area on the other. A burst of warm colour can be counteracted by cooler tones elsewhere. Empty space can be a tool for balance, allowing elements to breathe. Think like an artist and apply these concepts to how you curate an art collection or your interior.
