From period-style four-posters to contemporary oversized headboards, a statement bed creates a sumptuous focal point that's sure to bring sweet dreams
Today's statement beds are rooted in the past. In medieval times, beds made of fabric were the preserve of the rich. 'Textiles, hangings and tapestries showed the status of the owner,' explains Sarah Medlam, curator emeritus at the V&A. Before the 16th century, the main element in grand beds was textiles, and this was also for practicality. Noble households moved between houses to demonstrate their power and exert authority, so their furnishings needed to be portable and easily packed up. By the 16th century, when households were more settled, elaborate carved wooden beds came into fashion. Modern beds have evolved, taking inspiration from their predecessors.
FOURPOSTERS AND CANOPY BEDSFunction was the main reason that four-poster beds came about. ‘These were designed to retain warmth and provide privacy, key in draughty manor houses where multiple people slept in one room,’ explains interior designer Henriette von Stockhausen, founder of VSP Interiors. ‘During the Tudor and Jacobean periods, they became status symbols, showcasing intricate carvings and fabrics.’
Four-poster and canopy beds still have impact today. ‘They anchor a room; I love how they create a sense of presence and timelessness,’ says Henriette, whose designs look to the 21st century. ‘I want the bed to feel rooted in tradition, but not stuck in it. We often use antique frames, but upholster the headboard in an unexpected textile to bring it up to date. Where once drapes were heavy and formal, we might opt for lighter linens and voiles, or sometimes no canopy, just the bare structure.’
When choosing a four-poster, consider the scale of the room. On a practical note, she advises ensuring curtains are lined to fall properly without gathering dust.
