'Incorporating a display area in a kitchen island brings both character and functionality to the heart of the home,' says Charlotte Dubery, senior designer at Harvey Jones. 'It breaks up the solid block of cabinetry and adds visual interest by introducing personal touches, whether that's a stack of well-loved cookbooks, patterned pottery or even some plants.' A contrasting material or colour for the display area can highlight the items on show, as can subtle downlighting, such as an LED strip at the top of the cabinet, under the work surface. 'Don't be afraid to curate your display, changing it with the seasons, as a way to keep your kitchen feeling fresh and lived in,' adds Charlotte.
