ARE SUMMER SEMINARS THE FUTURE?

- TOM DELOREY

Coin Learning for Fun & Profit

Numismatics is the study of coins, paper money, tokens and medallic art. Its definition is sometimes expanded to include the collection of currency units other than coins.

The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1891, chartered by Congress and located on the campus of the Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was formed to advance the knowledge of numismatics as well as to enhance interest in the hobby. Membership is open to the general public.

The ANA has a rich history of holding its Summer Seminars for over half a century, taught by the best numismatic experts in the world on its college campus. ANA also holds two annual conventions and a plethora of online seminars.

Despite the general decline of attending events in person in all fields, interest in the ANA Summer Seminar continues to broaden.

THIS YEAR'S SUMMER SEMINARS

The schedule for the first session of the 2024 Summer Seminar, which begins June 16, looks like this: U.S. Coin Grading Part 1, which is a prerequisite for U.S. Coin Grading Part 2. There is another course for Grading World Coins and an Advanced U.S.

Coin Grading course. which will cover both highend coins and problem coins.

There will be separate courses on detecting counterfeit and altered coins and paper money, a course on how coins are made and how error coins result from these various minting processes, and another course on how to digitally edit coin photographs.

Other courses range from a broad Introduction to Numismatics to a highly specialized course on Ancient Greek coins. Topics include Hobo Nickels, African Bank Notes, Classic U.S. Commemorative coins (1892-1954), Early American Copper coins (1793-1857) and the Lives and Coins of our only Father-Son Chief Engraver team, the Barbers.
