Why Plastic Problem is a Growing Health Concern
Health Vision
|April 2026
India’s plastic consumption has grown rapidly over the past two decades, driven by urbanization, convenience culture, and economic expansion.
Yet, behind the visible convenience lies an invisible crisis—one that is increasingly affecting public health. While efforts to manage plastic waste have improved, the reality remains stark: only about 30% of plastic waste is recycled, and an even smaller fraction undergoes high-quality, closed-loop recycling. This gap is not just an environmental issue—it is a serious and growing health concern.
A System Under Strain
India generates millions of tonnes of plastic waste annually, but the infrastructure to handle it efficiently is still evolving. Despite having over 2,000 recycling units, less than 5% of these support advanced recycling processes that can safely convert plastic waste back into usable materials without degrading quality.
Most plastic waste ends up being down cycled, burned, or dumped in landfills and open environments. These practices release harmful toxins into the air, soil, and water—creating a chain reaction that directly impacts human health.
