The Silent Struggle - Addressing Mental Health Challenges Among First-Year Medical Students
Health Vision
|January 2025
The journey to becoming a doctor is inherently challenging, but it shouldn't come at the expense of mental health. By addressing the silent struggle faced by first-year medical students, we can create an environment that fosters resilience, empathy, and well-being.
Starting medical school is often seen as a monumental achievement, a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and resilience. However, the transition from undergraduate studies or other pre-medical experiences to the rigorous demands of medical education can take a significant toll on students’ mental health, especially during the first year. While medical school opens doors to a rewarding career, it also exposes students to unique stressors that can lead to anxiety, depression, and burnout.
First-year medical students face a steep learning curve. The intense academic workload, competitive environment, and the pressure to excel can overwhelm even the most prepared individuals. Many students grapple with imposter syndrome, feeling that they don’t belong or that their achievements are not deserved. This internal struggle, combined with external pressures, creates a perfect storm for mental health challenges.
