Living with Restrictive Cardiomyopathy

Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is one of the rarest and least understood forms of cardiomyopathy, but its impact on daily life can be profound. Unlike dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the hallmark of RCM is stiffening of the heart muscle, which prevents the ventricles from filling properly with blood. While the heart's pumping function often remains normal, reduced filling capacity leads to heart failure symptoms, circulation problems, and lifestyle limitations.

Living with this condition requires not only medical treatment but also a strong focus on coping strategies, lifestyle adjustments, and emotional resilience.

Challenges of Living with Restrictive Cardiomyopathy

Breathlessness and Fatigue: One of the most common challenges is shortness of breath during even mild physical activity. Since the heart cannot fill efficiently, less oxygenated blood reaches tissues, resulting in constant fatigue.

Swelling and Fluid Retention: Many patients experience edema in the legs, feet, or abdomen due to blood backing up into the veins. This can make movement uncomfortable and affect quality of life.

Exercise Limitations: Unlike healthy individuals, patients with RCM cannot tolerate strenuous exercise. Even moderate activity may trigger breathlessness, chest pain, or dizziness.

Emotional and Psychological Impact: The chronic nature of the condition, coupled with uncertainty about progression, often leads to anxiety, depression, or fear about the future.

Complications and Hospital Visits: Patients are at risk of arrhythmias, thromboembolic events (blood clots), and progressive heart failure.
