FOOT CARE 101 SMALL HABITS THAT COULD SAVE YOUR FEET
Diabetic Living Australia
|Nov/Dec 2025
Foot problems are incredibly common in people with diabetes due to reduced circulation, nerve damage (neuropathy) and a higher risk of infections.
-
The good news? A few simple, consistent habits can make all the difference in keeping your feet healthy and avoiding serious complications, including ulcers and even amputation.
Here's your daily guide to foot care that's easy to do and easy to forget - but far too important to ignore.
Check your feet every day (yes, every day)
This one habit can save you a world of trouble.
Diabetes can dull the nerves in your feet, making it harder to feel cuts, blisters or sores. Left unnoticed, these small issues can quickly become serious.
What to look for:
■Cuts, blisters, redness or swelling Ingrown toenails or cracked skin
■Any spots that feel unusually warm (a sign of possible infection) Changes in colour or shape
Pro tip: Use a mirror or ask a loved one to help if you have trouble seeing the bottom of your feet.
TRIM TOENAILS CAREFULLYKeep nails straight across and not too short. Cutting into the corners can lead to painful ingrown toenails, which are harder to heal for people with diabetes.
If you have trouble seeing or reaching your feet, consider having a podiatrist or foot care nurse trim your nails safely.
