THE 'INDIAN BADDIE' HAS ARRIVED

The women who kept their culture alive in their jewellery boxes, their hair rituals, their kitchen drawers — are now wearing all of it out

There is a specific kind of shock embedded in the comment - now infamous, widely screenshotted, endlessly quoted - that appeared beneath the viral clip from Tyla's Mumbai concert last year: "I never knew India had baddies like this". Read it once and it's rude. Read it twice and you begin to understand that it is, in fact, a very relevant fashion criticism. Because the shock wasn't about Indian women - it was about who had been deciding what beautiful looks like - and who had been systematically left out of that conversation.

The clip showed several Indian creators - bindis on, bangles stacked, existing confidently in public. The astonishment that greeted it in certain corners of the internet was about a worldview colliding with its own blind spot. For generations, Indian beauty was either exoticised from a distance or erased up close. The bindi became a Coachella prop. The jutti became a Prada pump. The dupatta became a Scandinavian scarf. The source was invisible but the aesthetic travelled.
