Barry Rodgers on the artists to have on your radar, as recommended by gallerists

The New Wave

A commentary on contemporary art culture is incomplete without a sound understanding of culture itself. Culture encompasses specific behaviours and schools of thought through which societies shape lives. Each culture and subculture establishes its own norms and accepted practices, serving as a multilayered lens through which individuals define themselves, determine their identity and self-actualise.

Contemporary art culture thrives on the idea that something can exist purely for its own sake without pretence or insecurity. This inherent freedom of expression provides the space to breathe and evolve organically.

In celebration of creativity, we shine a spotlight on the pioneering artists expected to continue to make waves in 2024. These recommendations come from galleries and directors of innovative art initiatives, best known for spotting diverse talent within the contemporary art space.

Riddhi Bhalla, Director, Gallery Blueprint 12, recommends:

YOUDHISTHIR MAHARJAN

Maharjan, who was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, but currently resides in Boston, United States, works with reclaimed book pages and text, making evocative collages that speak to those who look closely. His artistic practice exemplifies contemplation, commitment, and timelessness. His inspiration starts with the book itself, both with its potential meaning as well as its physicality. He spends time browsing at second-hand bookstores until a book title attracts him. He buys it, takes it home and begins working with it. Maharjan has showcased at the recently concluded India Art Fair.
