The Grammy-winning DJ has just bought the mansion of his dreams in Clifton worth more than R150 million – but it's been a long and winding road to get there

AS A child, his mornings began with milking cows alongside his grandmother in an Eastern Cape village near Mthatha a place with no running water or toilet, where hard work was simply a way of life.

But my, how things have changed. DJ Black Coffee can afford any property that takes his fancy now and that includes the priciest house on South Africa's poshest street.

The internationally renowned music maker recently bought a magnificent mansion on Nettleton Road in Clifton, Cape Town, for R157 million through his company Little Ark Holdings.

The property, called The Pentagon, was originally listed at R160m and sold for just under R3m less after "quite a process with two prospective buyers", estate agent Lance Cohen says, and is the most expensive residential sale in the country this year.

Designed by well-known South African architect Stefan Antoni, The Pentagon is nothing short of spectacular.

It boasts five luxurious en-suite bedrooms, a private cinema with a world of entertainment at the touch of a button, a fully equipped gym and a state-of-the art study.

A private lift services all floors and there are two self-contained staff quarters.

Outside, manicured gardens frame a rim-flow pool and there are four spacious garages to accommodate multiple vehicles. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Atlantic Ocean's endless expanse, while the iconic Twelve Apostles provide a dramatic backdrop for spectacular sunsets.

Nettleton Road houses only 40 properties, and prospective buyers need a gross monthly income of R5,3 million to qualify.

Black Coffee (49) reportedly paid cash for his mansion through his company.

"I hardly had a childhood," he once said.
