SHORT SHARP SHOCKS: Volume Four

BLU-RAY DEBUT Another macabre selection box of shorts, curated by the BFI. The main attraction is Roger Christian's haunting "Black Angel", the support feature to The Empire Strikes Back. It's a vividly realised medieval fantasy that anticipates the mist-and-armour aesthetic of Excalibur.

From the '40s come the intriguingly metatextual "The Fatal Night", notable for an early appearance by The Avengers' Patrick Macnee, and "Death In The Hand", a stagey, interminable tale of fate foretold. Two instalments of '50s anthology show Strange Experiences provide more black and white shudders fairground chiller "The Laughing Clown" has a lingering weirdness.
