On 5 March 493, after more than two years under siege, Ravenna's gates swung open, ushering in a precarious alliance between the barbarian successors to the Western Roman empire. One of these was the incumbent, Odoacer, self-declared king of Italy. The other was Theodoric the Amal, king of the Ostrogoths, who had invaded Italy in 488, eventually besieging Ravenna until it was forced to surrender.
