Nottingham’s annual Goose Fair, normally a carnival of trade and cheer, turned into total chaos in 1766. Amid sky-high food costs and a poor harvest, the sight of mountains of overpriced cheese at the annual autumn event inflamed the tempers of a starving populace. When visiting merchants from Lincolnshire tried to haul away whole wagonloads of the prized dairy product, a furious crowd - led by so-called ‘rude lads’, women and children - demanded that the cheese be distributed in the city, not sold elsewhere.
