Is plant-based milk good for you? We asked an expert to sip through the science

Not that long ago, ordering a coffee with a niche, plant-based milk would send shock waves among baristas – but these days, dairy-free options are a mainstay in supermarket aisles and cafes.

Choosing between these alternative varieties can sometimes feel like picking a favourite food. Do you prefer rice or are you more of a pea person? Does almond make your mornings? Or are you all about the sweet goodness of oats?

For those going off taste, the decision may be simple, but for those going for the best plant-based milk for their health, well, that's where things get complicated.

GP and dietician Dr Terri-Lynne South, who is the chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Specific Interest Group in Obesity Management, says that choosing the right plant-based milk involves several important factors – and yes, there's a cupful to consider.
