It’s a tradition that dates back to the early 1950s, when Harry Truman’s wife, Bess, invited Mamie Eisenhower to the White House for tea and a tour ahead of Dwight Eisenhower’s taking office. Since then, succeeding first ladies have hosted the wives of presidents-elect at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as a sweet gesture of goodwill.
Until now. On Nov. 13, Melania Trump rejected the tea-and-tour invitation from the outgoing first lady, Jill Biden, who’s set to depart the White House alongside husband President Joe Biden in late January 2025. In an official statement released that morning, a spokesperson for Donald Trump’s wife of 19 years said that the 54-year-old would “not be attending today’s meeting,” adding that “her husband’s return to the Oval Office to commence the transition process is encouraging, and she wishes him great success.”
