For the better part of last year, rumours swirled around Tessa Virtue and her fiancé, Morgan Rielly, 29. Had they tied the knot? The Olympic ice dancer, 34, has captured the hearts of Canadians over the years, bringing home a gold medal (with partner Scott Moir) in 2010, two silver medals in 2014 and two more golds in 2018 before retiring in 2019. And it would appear that she and Morgan – a defenceman for the Toronto Maple Leafs since 2013 – captured each other’s hearts as well.

After months of speculation, Tessa confirmed with Hello! Canada that they did, in fact, exchange vows last summer.

Tessa and Morgan said “I do” in a ceremony at Toronto’s Noce restaurant, with only four guests in attendance. The next day, they flew to Italy with 11 family members to celebrate.

“Neither of us wanted it to be about us,” says Tessa. “We didn’t want to be the centre of attention, especially with vows. It was the most private and personal thing you can possibly think of.”

Here, for the first time, newlywed Tessa reveals how she and her NHL-star beau planned their perfectly private wedding.

Congratulations to you and Morgan, Tessa! Tell us about the proposal. It was at home – very private, really intimate. It was something we had been speaking about and planning together but a really beautiful, quiet moment that felt reflective of who we are as a couple.
