Fridges and other trusted household appliances come with a hidden danger lurking behind their domestic helpfulness, with fire departments across the U.S. responding to thousands of calls annually when labor-saving amenities go on the blink and go ablaze -sometimes with deadly results.

In 2017, 70 people died and 70 more were injured when a residential fridge went on the fritz from an electrical problem and turned into an inferno, decimating a 24-story high-rise in London in the worst fire disaster in Britain since the German blitz in World War II.
