The meat industry faced more than its fair share of turbulence in 2025, driven largely by widespread foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks affecting nearly all major feedlots. As a result, weaner calf prices were highly unstable during the first part of the year, marked by sharp fluctuations.
Despite these challenges, Bonsmara SA production auctions yielded outstanding results. An impressive 120 auctions were held from February to November during which good prices were realised that went against the industry’s volatility.
Bonsmara bull prices
A total of 2 680 Bonsmara bulls were sold at an average price of R83 766, which is approximately R6 000 higher than the 2024 average. Prices rose sharply, especially in the second half of the year, with commercial breeders securing favourable slaughter prices across A, B, and C grade animals.
