In a historic leap toward clean-energy industrialization, Morocco is set to host Africa’s first-ever battery gigafactory — a $5.6 billion investment led by China’s Gotion High-Tech. The landmark project will anchor Morocco’s emergence as a continental hub for advanced energy technologies and accelerate Africa’s participation in the fast-evolving global electric-vehicle (EV) supply chain.
Located in the Atlantic port city of Kenitra, northwest Morocco, the gigafactory is expected to begin production in 2026 with an initial capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually — enough to power hundreds of thousands of EVs. Over subsequent phases, output is projected to expand to 100 GWh, positioning Morocco among the world’s top battery-manufacturing nations.
A Strategic Bet on CleanEnergy Sovereignty
For Rabat, the investment represents more than industrial diversification — it signals a strategic pivot toward high-value, technology-driven manufacturing. By producing critical components such as cathodes and anodes, rather than merely assembling imported cells, Morocco aims to capture a greater share of the global battery value chain. This vertical integration enhances local supply-chain security, cuts dependence on imports, and aligns with the country’s ambition to become a bridge between African mineral wealth and European clean-energy demand.
