Egypt Turns to LNG Imports Amid Declining Gas Output and Economic Strain

Egypt plans to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) between July 2025 and June 2026 to bridge the widening gap between falling domestic production and rising power demand, the cabinet announced Wednesday.

The move comes amid mounting fiscal pressure and sustained weakness in the country's non-oil private sector.
According to sources, Egypt has secured deals to purchase 150-160 LNG cargoes from energy firms and trading houses. The imports will complement dwindling domestic output and pipeline supplies from Israel. Government data shows gas production has plunged from a peak of 6,133 million standard cubic meters in March 2021 to just 3,485 million in April 2025.
