Opportunities and challenges of hydrogen-powered vehicles in India

Hydrogen as a fuel

As the global automotive industry races towards cleaner energy solutions, hydrogen-powered vehicles have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuels. For India—a country grappling with severe pollution levels and energy security concerns—hydrogen offers a potential pathway to sustainable mobility. However, the adoption of hydrogen as a mainstream fuel source is not without its challenges. This article explores the opportunities and obstacles India faces in integrating hydrogen-powered vehicles into its transportation ecosystem.

Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is a clean and versatile energy carrier. When used in fuel cells, hydrogen combines with oxygen from the air to produce energy, with water vapour as the only by product. This zero-emission process makes hydrogen-powered vehicles highly attractive for reducing air pollution, particularly in urban areas where vehicles emissions are a significant concern.

For India, hydrogen represents an opportunity to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce dependence on imported oil. Given the country’s ambitious goals to transition to a low-carbon economy, hydrogen aligns well with government initiatives such as the National Hydrogen Mission. Launched in 2021, this mission aims to position India as a global leader in hydrogen production and utilization by fostering a hydrogen economy.

Additionally, hydrogen has the potential to bridge the gap between renewable energy generation and transportation. India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity, particularly in solar and wind. However, the intermittent nature of these sources poses challenges for consistent energy supply. Hydrogen can act as a storage medium, allowing excess renewable energy to be converted into hydrogen and used later to power vehicles, thereby enhancing grid stability and ensuring energy availability.
