July 2023

A disaster happened on 18 June 2023, shook the world. On 18 June, 2023, Titan, a submersible vehicle operated by American Tourism and Expeditions company, OceanGate, imploded during an expedition to the Wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean. The submersible went on an expedition to the view the wreckage of the sunken Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland but two hours later, it lost complete communication with the people on shore.

TITAN SUB IMPLOSION

On board the vehicle were Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French Deep Sea explorer and Titanic Expert, Hamish Harding, a British Billionaire businessman, Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani-British Billionaire businessman and Suleman, the son of Dawood. After around 1 hour 45 minutes into the dive, the sub lost its communication with the people on shore. Authorities were alerted when it failed to resurface at the scheduled time. After the submersible had been missing for four days, a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) discovered a debris field containing parts of Titan, about 500 metres from the bow of the Titanic. US Authorities said that a debris field located near the expected spot suggests that a ‘catastrophic implosion’ had taken place, instantly killing all five passengers on board.

The US Navy says it detected sounds "consistent with an implosion" shortly after the sub lost contact on Sunday during a descent to the Titanic wreck at 3,800m below sea level - but this information was only made public later. The “Titan’s” hull is believed to have collapsed upon itself as a result of enormous water pressure. The sub was built to withstand such enormous water pressure at the bed of the ocean but something went wrong. The vessel was so deep that the amount of water on it would have been equivalent to the weight of the Eiffel Tower, tens of thousands of tonnes. If there were a rupture to the structure, the pressure outside would be much greater than the one inside the hull, compressing the vessel.
