Africa's Energy Future: From Resource Extraction To Global Leadership
Forbes Africa
|October - November 2025
Africa sits at the center of the global energy transition. The question is no longer whether the continent will play a role, but whether it will lead. With abundant resources, a young population, and rising demand for reliable power, Africa has the ingredients to move from a resource supplier to a global energy innovator.
As Executive Chairman of OLA Energy, one of Africa's largest indigenous downstream players, I see both the urgency and the opportunity every day. Operating across more than 15 markets, serving millions of Africans, our mission is clear: Africa cannot afford to remain an afterthought in the global energy debate.
Africa's Moment in the Energy Transition
The global energy system is undergoing its most profound transformation in a century. Traditional oil and gas markets are being reshaped by decarbonization, while renewables and clean technologies dominate investor focus.
Africa is uniquely positioned to benefit. The continent holds 40% of the world's renewable energy potential, vast reserves of natural gas, and critical minerals essential for the clean-tech economy. Yet too many of our people still lack reliable electricity. This paradox must end.
At OLA Energy, we believe Africa must shift from being seen only as an exporter of raw materials to becoming a hub of transformation, producing, refining, and innovating energy for its own people and for the world.

AI: A LADDER TO PROGRESS OR A TRAP OF DIVISION? THE CHOICE IS OURS
Artificial intelligence (AI) is not a neutral force. It is an amplifier. It can magnify our brightest innovations or our darkest biases. It can serve as a ladder for human development or a trap that widens inequality. The path it takes is not pre-programmed by algorithms; it will be determined by the choices we make about trust, capability, and cooperation.

UBUNTU IN ACTION: BRIDGING TRADITION AND INNOVATION FOR COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT
Although the word is derived from southern African Nguni languages, the concept of Ubuntu finds roots across Africa. Of course, while there are direct translations, Ubuntu really represents an ethic of interdependence, where the flourishing of the individual and the wellbeing of the community are seen as mutually reinforcing rather than opposed. In advocating for what he refers to as 'Ubuntu Stoicism', Tiisetso Maloma argues: \"Ubuntu signals a sense of personal responsibility. The community benefits from the virtues of responsible individuals. They also serve as inspiration to others, particularly the younger generation.\" From the perspective of an academic and head of an institution, there is a distinct connection to be made with the very pursuit of academia.
