The tradition of the Christmas loaf was prevalent from as early as the 13th century, and was practised to as late as the 19th century. Farmers would set aside some exceptional wheat from the summer harvest to bake a loaf during the Christmas period to bless his animals and land for the coming season.

In the folklore of Europe's agricultural heartlands from Germany to Scandinavia, Christmas was not just a celebration of the Nativity, but a critical ceremony for securing the next year's harvest.

At the core of this assurance was the tradition of the Farmer's Christmas Loaf (or Julekake in some Nordic contexts), a sacred link between what was taken from the ground and what would be returned to it.

The ritual begins not in December, but at the height of the summer harvest. The farmer would select the finest, largest sheaf of wheat, rye, or maize from the entire field. This sheaf was set aside, untouched by the threshing flail, and held in a place of honour until the winter holiday. This reserved grain was considered the soul of the harvest.
