FDA approves virus-resistant gene-edited pig

Farmer's Weekly

|

July 4 - 11, 2025

UK-based animal genetics company Genus has bred a pig that is resistant to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS).

- Lindi Botha

This could reduce herd fatalities and decrease antibiotic use, since PRRS increases the need for antibiotics by more than 200%.

The pig was bred in the US and, on 30 April, the PRRS-Resistant Pig (PRP) Programme received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the US food supply chain.

This approval, granted to the Pig Improvement Company (PIC), a division of Genus, marks a significant milestone as one of the first gene-edited livestock approved for use in US food supply.
