Championing Diversity and Security: Jenny Brinkley on AWS's Strategic Vision for Cybersecurity

At AWS re:Inforce 2024 in Philadelphia, I enjoyed speaking with Jenny Brinkley, Director of Amazon Security. Jenny is instrumental in shaping AWS's compliance and security strategies, emphasizing security awareness programs, upskilling initiatives, and future preparedness. Our discussion explored vital topics, including diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), the cybersecurity skills gap, and fostering a robust culture of security within AWS. Jenny's insights provide a comprehensive view of AWS's forward-thinking approach to tackling these pressing industry challenges.

What are your long-term DEI goals at AWS for the cybersecurity industry, and how can we sustain momentum in that area?

Representation is critical. In an earlier session today, we discussed the importance of having diverse individuals in the room-people who aren't just white men. We must offer opportunities to those who may not realize these jobs are available. This includes working with diverse populations from high school to academia, offering scholarships, investing in online training, and having people like myself meet with students. In the long term, it's about investing in STEM education and online training programs and encouraging leadership through mentorship, advocacy, and our apprenticeship programs.

These efforts help young talent realize that security careers are within their reach.

As technology evolves rapidly, how does AWS keep pace with upskilling programs, particularly for emerging technologies like cloud security?

One of the big reasons I stay at Amazon is the emphasis on continuous learning and curiosity.
