|June 2025
Intelsat prioritizes the provision of genuinely seamless, high-performance connectivity at scale across various airline fleets and routes, while also offering flexible monetization options and operational value. MIKE DEMARCO, Chief Commercial Officer, Intelsat, offers his perspective on the key developments that are shaping connectivity across airlines. Some excerpts
How are satellite connectivity services transforming the civil aviation sector?
Satellite connectivity services are fundamentally reshaping civil aviation by transitioning in-flight connectivity from a passenger luxury to an expected core offering, essential for both customer experience and airline operations. Airlines are now able to provide fast, reliable broadband that mirrors on-ground standards, supporting everything from streaming to video calls. More significantly, real-time connectivity underpins operational efficiencies such as predictive maintenance, live weather-based routing for fuel savings, and enhanced crew services. This connectivity allows for new revenue streams through digital advertising and e-commerce and is increasingly integrated with loyalty programs to deliver personalized passenger experiences.
The evolution of hybrid satellite architectures—combining geostationary (GEO) and low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites—ensures consistent, high-quality coverage across all flight paths, including over remote and transoceanic routes. With electronically steered antennas lowering equipment-related drag and maintenance, airline sustainability targets become more attainable. In sum, satellite connectivity services are enabling airlines to drive digital transformation, streamline costs, and elevate their brand in an increasingly competitive market.
What are the key priorities in growing multi-orbit in-flight connectivity services?
