Unlocking Potential of Kashmir Saffron in Global Market

Globally, saffron cultivation is confined to specific geographic belts with suitable climates—primarily Iran, Spain, Afghanistan, and Kashmir in India. Saffron is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7-8 per cent, fueled by its expanding use in modern medicine, cosmetics, herbal remedies, and gourmet cuisine. Rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds, saffron is increasingly valued in the pharmaceutical, wellness, and dairy sectors.

Legacy Rooted in the Valley

Kashmir’s relationship with saffron dates back over 2,500 years, with historical records pointing to its cultivation in the Pampore region near Srinagar. Passed down through generations, saffron farming in Kashmir is not only an economic activity but also a cultural tradition.

Symbol of purity

Grown at an altitude of over 1,600 metres in the unique climate of the Kashmir Valley, Kashmiri saffron is considered the finest in the world due to its exceptional colour, aroma, and purity. Grown in the clay-sandy soils of Pampore, this saffron benefits from a rare combination of altitude, climate, and traditional farming techniques. Producing just one kilogramme of premium-grade saffron can take over 300,000 flowers. Every strand is meticulously hand-harvested to preserve its integrity.
