The experts at boatcare share tips on how to look after sails and canvaswork to ensure they last

There's an age-old expression that a clean boat is a happy boat. This may seem like mostly an aesthetic endeavour, however, it shows pride in your vessel and improves curb appeal. Your canvas covers and sails play a huge part in the visual appearance of your boat. They're also susceptible to wear and tear from UV rays, wind, water, dirt and dust. Looking after them properly will not only improve the appearance of your boat but the life of the material.
Canvas cleaning technique
From sail and helm covers to sprayhoods and biminis, we like to use canvas to protect our vessels and ourselves. But, if not cared for properly, the canvas can lose its ability to repel water.
Keeping your canvas clean and in good shape is easier than you think, however, a word of warning: while cleaning with a pressure washer and household cleaning products may improve it visually, it can seriously damage the material.
Before starting to clean your canvas it's a good idea to remove loose dirt and bird droppings using a soft brush or a dry rag. Make sure to give it a good clean around fastenings and fixings. Depending on the level of dirt, you may want to use a slightly damp rag. You don't want to apply too much force when removing dirt as if you are not careful, you can work the dirt into the material.
Ideally, bird droppings or bug splatters should be removed as soon as you have noticed them. Left unchecked, they can leave an unsightly stain on your canvas.
When cleaning your canvas, many detergents can break down its water and UV-resistant coatings. If unsure what cleaner to use, check with the boat canvas manufacturer for the recommended cleaning solution.
