DURING 1956, when MG's long awaited update came, it was set to shock sports car enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic.

The new shape was lifted almost unchanged from the streamlined MG EX182 that had finished 12th outright at Le Mans in 1955. Three months later the production version with 1.5 litres and 51kW appeared and MG was swamped with orders.

Most came from the USA where around 78,000 MGAs would be sold during its six years of production. Australia saw the cars arrive in quantity as well; Ours in crates ready for local assembly to keep prices down.

New in 1956, an MGA cost £1256, which gave it a £340 advantage over Triumph’s more powerful TR3.

MGAs until 1959 were all 1.5-litre roadsters, but in May of that year a 1.6-litre engine was introduced and front disc brakes included.
