LOOKING MORE like something out of a washing machine, Mazda’s twinchamber rotary power unit, was an engine with performance to dwarf its compact size.

The rotary had been developed in Germany some years before Mazda saw its potential and tasked teams of engineers with solving the problem of apex seal wear. In Mazdas, the wear still occurred but only as frequently as did valve seat failure in conventional engines.

Mazda installed its 1148cc 12A rotary in several models, including the Capella RX2 and RX3. It saved its larger (1308cc) 13B version for the heavier and more luxurious RX4 sedan and hardtop.

1949 HRD VINCENT COMET

ALTHOUGH THE first postwar Vincent twin – the Series-B Rapide – appeared in 1946, it was soon joined by a single-cylinder variant in 1948, offered as the Meteor and the Comet. Effectively “half a Rapide”, these singles retained much of the twin’s advanced engineering.
