The three-door Thar isn't new to India; rather, it has been at the epitome of off-roaders in the country for ages, until the elder sibling with two extra doors, the Thar Roxx, arrived. With added tech and comfort factors influencing the Roxx's spec sheet, it became the most popular SUV cum off-roader built in and for the country, rapidly, to the extent that many updated their existing Thar to the Roxx.

Hence, it was time for Mahindra to give its users more reasons to choose the Thar. This rewrite was expected and much needed, as the original charm of the Thar is second to none, and not every SUV has to be a family mover. The niche that the Thar caters to is a strong one, and its loyalists always remain committed to this niche, regardless of the circumstances. My drive through the off-road course at the Mahindra Adventure Off-Road Academy got me to experience how fat the Thar has evolved to cater better to its niche and to compete with the current tech-driven ambience of the car market.
