Why We Trust GM's Super Cruise Driver Assistance System to Take the Wheel

Let’s be clear: We'd rather drive ourselves. Except ... we wouldn't always rather drive ourselves. Twisty mountain road? Of course. Long, straight, boring cruise on the superslab? Not so much. Several automakers offer advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that lend an invisible hand on the steering wheel, but we think none works as well as General Motors’ Super Cruise, which is why it’s the 2025 MotorTrend Best Tech winner for driver assistance.

Super Cruise allows the driver to take their hands offthe wheel and feet offthe pedals on certain mapped roads. Super Cruise is not a free-for-all like Tesla's Full Self Driving, but neither has GM restricted it to a few interstates around Detroit. Super Cruise, available on 20 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC models, will work on 750,000 miles of mapped U.S. and Canadian roads by the end of 2025, up from 400,000 in 2022.

Super Cruise, when used by an attentive driver, has the potential to make us safer. We all know what it's like to zone out behind the wheel. ADAS systems like Super Cruise prevent this from happening by handling the chores of keeping the car between the lane lines, managing speed, and steering through curves. They free the driver to do what they should be doing at freeway speeds: keeping their eyes down the road, scanning for potential hazards so they can act before they reach immediate danger.
