The annual Caravan Show at the Gallagher Conference Centre in Midrand has become almost synonymous with the introduction of new caravans. Have a look at what we encountered there.

Let's get caravanning!

STEALTH

Stealth has expanded its range of seven models by a further three, and two of them are now the manufacturer’s smallest models.

The Cub is light enough for drivers with a regular driving license. Two variants are available: the Cub Lite (GVM 600 kg, with an option to increase to 750 kg) and the Cub X-Country (GVM 750 kg with an option to increase to 1 100 kg). Remember, for any weight above 750 kg, you need a towing licence. Both models are intended for couples, but the Lite is for tar and the X-Country for gravel.

Both have the same hull and interior layout. The door is in the left panel at the rear, and that is also the side of the roof that lifts to give height next to the bed.

In such a small caravan, you don’t expect a separate benches, but Stealth has managed the seemingly impossible. The foot of the bed lifts up to the roof, which then gives you access to a bench on the left and right against each panel. It’s a smart use of space – and without scrambling the bedding.

You even have the option to ask for a second double bed. If so, the pop-up roof is replaced with a special roof you could describe as a roof-top tent with a solid section on top of the Cub. Like with a roof-top tent, you climb up to your bed using a ladder, with the original bed then underneath you.

The Lite has 13” wheels and the X-Country 14” wheels. The latter also gets mud flaps and a sink. The power system also differs: the Lite has a 220 V power system and the X-Country includes 12/220 V with an 8 A charger and 50 Ah battery. Both have a 50 ℓ water tank.

They don't know what we know

Despite technological advances, and the unrealistic notion held by some that camping is merely a way to show off, the heart of the lifestyle should remain unchanged, says Neels van Heerden.
