ROLE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN DRIVING SUSTAINABILITY WITHIN THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT DOMAIN
Commercial Vehicle
|September 2023
In a world faced with a severe climate change crisis, electric vehicles have emerged as a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation. Sustainability has been a buzzword for quite some time in climate crisis news, and policy makers are placing a renewed emphasis on promoting sustainable ways in different quarters writes Sanjeev Babbar, Director, JCBL Ltd.
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are emerging as effective alternatives to traditional vehicles that run on fossil fuels. There are multiple reasons behind the adoption of electric and other vehicles worldwide. Lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are the foremost reason. The fundamental advantage of fully electric vehicles is that they have zero emissions through the tailpipe. The zero-emission statistic means that these vehicles do not emit carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, or other harmful pollutants into the air. Even considering the emissions released from electricity production, petrol or diesel-run vehicles release almost three times more carbon dioxide than electric ones. Hence, replacing conventional vehicles in the public transport fleet with electric vehicles can reduce GHG emissions by a very substantial degree. Such vehicles are also much more energy efficient. EVs convert around 60 per cent of electric power from the grid, while conventional diesel vehicles can only convert about 20 per cent of the energy from their fuel to the wheels.
