India Has Been Waiting For The ELECTRIC FACEOFF
BBC TopGear India
|December 2025
Here is the real twist in the electric car tale. The two most significant battery-powered SUVs of the year are not from Silicon Valley, Stuttgart or Shanghai. They are from Pune and Chennai. India has finally arrived at the EV main table, bearing not one but two very serious contenders.
On one end is the Tata Harrier EV and on the other the Mahindra XEV 9E. Both large. Both are homegrown. Both prove that Indian manufacturers are no longer content to follow global trends. They want to set them.
This matchup is an important one because these SUVs are not early experiments. They are not toe-dipping compliance cars. They are fully formed products designed to convince the world that India can engineer electric mobility at a world-class level. And when both companies swing this hard, the question becomes obvious. Which one is better?
To find the answer, we spent two full days driving, testing, charging, rattling over bad roads, and in one case even heading to an airstrip. Yes. We take our job seriously. And because I would prefer to keep my inbox free of hate mail, I will say this right at the start. This comparison is not between a good EV and a better EV. It is a battle between two excellent ones. The win is narrow. Very narrow. But there is a winner. And a very interesting story. Let's begin at the place where you first meet a car. The exterior.
Design and Street Presence
The Harrier EV is instantly recognisable. Tata has not messed with a silhouette that buyers clearly love. What they have done is clean up the surfaces, sharpen the edges and add futuristic lighting signatures that make the whole SUV feel more thought through. The closed-off grille and aero wheels tell you that this is a child of electrons, not diesel. Yet the stance remains butch enough to look comfortable outside a farmhouse or a five-star hotel. It is modern and rugged in my eyes.

TOFF ROADERS
I AM ALONE IN THE DARK. The sky is overcast, and being somewhere on a single track road near the bottom of the Lake District's Hardknott Pass at 11pm, that dark is reliably inky, unbothered by even the barest lumen of ambient light pollution.
