VOLKSWAGEN TEES UP £17K ID 1 FOR 2027 DEBUT

Electric city car will arrive with 94bhp and a range of at least 155 miles – and introduce cutting-edge software

Volkswagenn has vowed to realise its long-held goal of an 'affordable' £17,000 electric car in 2027 with the arrival of the production version of the new ID Everyl concept car.

Described as a model “from Europe for Europe”, the new baby hatchback will serve as the spiritual successor to the Up as an A-segment city car. It will also be the entry point to the German firm’s range of bespoke electric ID models. Volkswagen boss Thomas Schäfer said the ID Everyl is “the car the world has been waiting for”.

The production version of the ID Everyl will use a variant of the front-wheel-drive MEB Entry platform, which has been developed for the forthcoming ID 2, ID 2X, Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq. The ID 2 will start from €25,000 (£21,000) when it hits dealerships next year, some £4000 cheaper than the larger ID 2X.

The ID Everyl shares largely the same front end as the ID 2all concept car up to the A-pillar but it has a shorter wheelbase and a new, smaller LFP battery. It also has a different rear axle, based on the Polo’s.

A newly developed electric motor produces 94bhp and enables a claimed top speed of 81mph. Volkswagen has given no details of battery capacity but says the range will be “at least” 155 miles. The ID 2all offers 223bhp and around 280 miles.

The decision to use the same front-wheel drive system as the ID 2all was partly to cut development costs and time: in total the ID Everyl will take around three years to develop, a notable reduction on a traditional lead time.
