FLUIDITY IN FORM
October 2025
|Architecture + Design
A double-height living room with an elliptical skylight and a sculptural staircase reveals how architecture can turn something as intangible as light into a material. Hosapete Mane House by Cadence Architects celebrates fluidity, light, and the art of living with its dynamic roof profiles and interconnected volumes
Located in the sun-drenched city of Hospet, Karnataka, Hosapete Mane House by Cadence Architects is like a diamond in the rough. Shaped and polished through challenges to reveal its true brilliance, it was conceived as a series of volumes fused together, instead of a monolithic structure. Co-founders and Principal Architects Smaran Mallesh, Vikram Rajashekar, and Narendra Pirgal created a journey-like experience and developed what they described as an “animated section”. Each portion responded to the sun's path, the prevailing winds, and the family's rhythm of daily life, resulting in a residence that doesn't simply exist within its environment but breathes with it.
CLIMATE AS COLLABORATOR
Customised to Hospet’s challenging climate, the design team strategically blocked sunlight from the west and south, while opening generously towards the garden in the north and east. This isn’t watchful architecture pulling away from its environment; it’s judicious planning that works with nature rather than against it. What this orientation manages to achieve is a visual and spatial dialogue between the interior and the landscape, dissolving boundaries, and extending the living experience outward. The result is a home that remains cosy without excessive mechanical cooling, where orientation and form collaborate to create livable spaces in challenging conditions.
