Henge House is an Urban Home designed to lean into Bengaluru's Garden City nostalgia.

QUIET MONUMENTALITY

For the Banka family, the dream of a home was inseparable from the dream of a garden. And it was with this vision that the conversation with their architects from Thirty Cross Collective, a young, innovative studio in Bengaluru, began. Through initial discussions, the brief became clear: to craft a family home rooted in the area’s age-old trees, supporting the family’s love for gardening and creating a space for family and friends to soak in Garden City nostalgia. A home where they could gather, linger, and reconnect with each other and nature.

imageGOING NATURAL

Located on a 60x40 corner plot in South Bengaluru, this ground-plus-three residence adds a contemporary form to the streetscape, defined by clean lines and a restrained but authentic expression of natural material. Natural stone is used with intent, adding dimension and texture to the otherwise minimal façade. The defining feature of the building is its landscaped terrace, a ‘Garden in the Sky,’ visually articulated through a frame of stone louvres. This detail not only breaks the monolithic mass of the structure but also lends the design its recognisable identity. The use of rugged Madurai Pink Granite in a lightweight, louvred configuration creates a deliberate contrast, a conversation between local, traditional material and contemporary application.

MUSING MUSEUMS

A few months back, when I was in Budapest, I walked into a building that left me awestruck. The inquisitive me went on to explore, and I discovered that it was a museum with pixels on the exterior and that the curved structure of the building dipped underground to form the interiors, even as the garden I was walking on was the green roof of the building that interjected at street level! Woah! I quickly took some pictures and went on to research this building, and the more I read about it, the more I fell in love with it. And then of course I had to share it with you all!
